About Adobe Digital Editions

Adobe Digital Editions is used to read eBooks you download from library websites or popular booksellers. It may be used in high-contrast mode or with popular screen readers.

Adobe Digital Editions must be used to access eBooks that are provided by the HLLC. It is available as a free download from the Adobe Digital Editions Download site or by visiting the app store for the device you would like to use (iPad, etc...).

Why do I need Adobe Digital Editions?

  • Required by vendors to download ebooks from the library onto your computer.
  • Organize your ebooks into a custom library.
  • Access and read ebooks on all of your devices using Adobe Digital Editions
  • Ensures that the Digital Rights Management (DRM) remain on the ebook file to protect it from copyright infringement. DRM are digital restrictions created by the publisher to limit borrowing, viewing, printing, downloading and copying/pasting of ebook text.

Checking out eBooks to your Computer or Mobile Device

eBooks are checked out to your computer or mobile device for 7 days.

  • eBooks will no longer open on Adobe Digital Editions once the loan period expires.
  • Expired eBooks have to be manually removed from the Adobe Digital your library.Right-click the eBook and select "Remove from Library"
  • Highlights, bookmarks and notes will no longer be available once the loan expires.

How do I highlight, make notes and bookmark pages?

  • Highlight selected text and right-click to find the options.
  • When making notes, a window will pop up for you to enter notes.
  • All highlights, notes and book marks will appear in Bookmark log on the left.
  • Once a eBook's loan expires, you will no longer be able to access your highlights, notes and bookmarks

How do I use Adobe Digital Editions with a screen reader?

  • Adobe Digital Editions 3.0 and above versions are designed to work with assistive technologies on Mac and Windows.
  • Installation instructions can be found on the respective web sites (JAWS, NVDA, or Window-Eyes on Windows and VoiceOver on Mac).
  • Version 3.0 and above are designed with support for full keyboard controls, text enlargement, and support for high-contrast modes. Shortcuts are listed in the Getting Started eBook (installed automatically with the Adobe Digital Editions)

Why am I receiving an error message when opening an ebook?

  • Example error messages: 
    • Error getting License. License Service Communication Problem:
      E_LIC_ALREADY_RETURNED\W_ADEPT_CORE_LOAN_NOT_ONRECORD
  • These messages may appear when trying to open an ebook in your library that has already expired or been returned.
  • You may also receive error messages if you have not authorized your computer. Follow the steps, outlined in the linke below, to authorize your computer.
