Does the HLLC have the textbooks for my class?

Answer

The HLLC does not purchase course textbooks.

Hirons Library, like most American academic libraries, does not purchase course textbooks. It is always the responsibility of students to provide their own textbooks for courses they take at Goldey-Beacom College.

Why the library does not purchase textbooks:

  • They are revised frequently and would require constant repurchasing.
  • Their bindings are intended for one-person use and are not sturdy enough for library use.
  • One copy will not be enough for a whole class, and buying enough copies for everyone in multiple classes would be prohibitively expensive.
  • The mission of most American academic libraries is to purchase material that supplements class materials, not class materials themselves.

What you can do:

Sometimes professors put a personal copy of the class textbook on reserve for you at the library’s circulation desk. To determine if the library has the book, search the library’s catalog (http://go.gbc.edu/library) for the book’s title or author. If you find the book in the catalog, simply request it from a library staff member. Remember that:

  • You must present a valid Goldey-Beacom student ID with a current semester sticker in order to use a reserve textbook.
  • These books are for use in the library only. They cannot be taken from the room.
  • The book may be an older edition than what is required for your course.
  • If your professor has not put a copy of the textbook on reserve, you can always ask him or her to do so.

Goldey-Beacom College’s online bookstore sells textbooks and even rents electronic copies of select titles. Visit online or call 800-325-3252 for more information.
